THE STRANGE CASE OF HESTER CILLIER (article first published : 2006-11-20)

The Strange Case Of Hester Cillier is a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre.

Due to the huge popularity of this delightfully different evening of mystery and Edwardian mayhem at Hexagon Dive last month, the Hexagon is bringing the show back for two more performances. This is just in time for year-end celebrations when an evening out with just the right balance of light entertainment and whimsical intellectual exercise is just what the doctor ordered!

This is a classy, period ‘whodunnit’ in a classic ‘murder thriller style’. It's 1909 on the Parktown Ridge. Six guests dine with the Randlord and his wife. After dinner, a gruesome murder is committed. The audience has to unravel the mystery and guess who did it and why.

Journey to the turn of the century where Edwardian Johannesburg’s high society and gold barons lurk behind sordid secrets and tales of intrigue. See Michael Buchan, the unexpected guest in his quest for the ultimate truth as he uncovers the mysteries of the Randlord’s mansion house and its guests. Meet Lady Eva Hochenheim, Fleetwood Rawthorne, Grey Beaufort, Mr and Mrs Olivier and the Randlord himself, Henry Beaufort, and his wife Julia.

This is a unique dinner experience and stars Paul Spence, returned from years in the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Annie Robinson, veteran of many South African movies and Gauteng theatre. It is directed by Clive Rodel.

The Strange Case Of Hester Cillier has performances on November 24 and 25 at 19h00 at the Hexagon Dive on the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg campus. Tickets R125 include a three course meal. Tables of 8 available (less than 8 may be asked to share). Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
