THE MERCURY DURBAN THEATRE AWARDS (article first published : 2006-11-5)

Get out your feather boas and sparkly tiaras - the fourth annual glitzy Durban Theatre Awards takes place at 19h30 on November 27 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

This gala occasion is now firmly established on Durban’s theatrical calendar as a fabulous social event not to be missed. The best theatrical talent of the past year will therefore once again be acknowledged for their excellence.

“The awards system considers only those productions originating and presented in Durban during the period October 1 2005 to September 30 2006,” says administrator Peter Taylor. “These productions include the genres of drama and comedy, musical theatre, music revue, and children’s theatre, with a total of thirty-nine productions vying for honours at this year’s awards ceremony. The calibre of work produced in Durban has remained consistently high over the years and The Mercury Durban Theatre Awards recognises and acknowledges these standards.”

The award ceremony follows a Royal Variety Concert – type format. Productions to be staged over the festive season in theatres in and around Durban will be invited to present short excerpts of their shows for audiences to be able to enjoy highlights of some of the shows on offer.

The date has been set for November 27 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and the evening will be glitzy, sophisticated and glamorous. As Monday night is a “night-off” for most productions in Durban, audiences can expect to brush shoulders with who’s who on the Durban theatre scene. The evening will be along the same format as the “Oscars” with excerpts from productions interspersed with the presenting of the awards.

The evening will be again hosted by the ever-charming and elegant Joanne Pillay and Terrence Pillay.

Once again The Mercury Durban Theatre Awards are grateful for generous donations from their sponsors and partners. Various Durban-based businesses have joined in supporting this year’s awards thus acknowledging the quality of work produced by the city’s theatre community.

Reinforcing the lead taken by media partner The Mercury, this year’s awards are also supported by RoyalSechaba Food Services; The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre; Essenwood Craft Market; Troubadour Productions; Sunshine Factory; DarkHorse Productions; Durban Theatre Diary; Computicket and Publicity Matters. Going Places who will be donating a glass of after-show champagne to everyone in honour of the launch of their new ticketing system – Strictly Tickets.

Tickets are available at Computicket at a mere R65 each. Computicket have kindly waived their usual service charge for the event. Credit card bookings can be made on 011 340 8000.
