SYD KITCHEN AT VESTIGE (article first published : 2006-09-25)

Since the 70’s, guitarist/singer/songwriter Syd Kitchen has remained an innovative, active, non-compromising part of the South African musical landscape. A highly acclaimed teacher, thinker and published poet, he performs extensively at Festivals and clubs throughout South Africa, both solo and with various combinations.

He has released several critically acclaimed albums to date; all born of an eclectic, curious spirit unfazed by market-place considerations or the wishes of others.

This eclecticism and freedom of spirit has seen his musical journey traverse the Kitchen Brothers, through Equinox, Harry Was A Snake, The Utensils, The Flying Sombreros, to his current collaborations in Amakool, the Aquarian Quartet (with Steve Newman, Greg Georgiades & Tony Cox) and Bafo Bafo (with Madala Kunene).

Syd Kitchen lives in Durban where he teaches music at his School of Applied Fretboard Logic, while reading for his MA/PhD. in Musicology with the University of Natal.

Regarded by many as the undiscovered jewel of South African music, Syd Kitchen continues to defy his critics by creating beautiful and eclectically intelligent music. His poetic command and skilful ability to write lyrics that at once make incisive social commentary and observation set him aside from the rest. Additionally, his reputation and stature as a guitarist and singer/songwriter place him firmly amongst the very best in SA. In exercising an independent spirit that has consistently refused to be harnessed and fettled by an industry interested in little besides the “bottom line”, Syd Kitchen has, in the process, carved a niche for himself that is uniquely his.

Catch Syd Kitchen’s “Nite Out Session” on September 28 at Vestige Bistro & Bar. The show starts at 20h00. More information from Mithesh or Mandy on 031 201 7767.
