SURFING SAFARI (article first published : 2006-09-23)

Durban summers are hot and steamy, and The Barnyard Theatre is celebrating by throwing a three-month long beach party!

Surfing Safari débuts at the Gateway venue over the festive season, firmly ruling out any notions of a white Christmas.

Imagine being stranded on a desert island with nothing except a beach hut and a large bar stocked to capacity with exotic cocktails. Then add a 10-piece cast to take you on a whirlwind summer holiday. Surfing Safari is inspired by all songs and artists who pay homage to summer. This musical smorgasbord covers hits from the likes of Cliff Richard, Sheryl Crow, UB40, Gipsy Kings and Santana.

The show features Andrew Webster (last seen as Wally in Born To Run), Nigel Morkel (of Afro-Z), Monique Steyn (seen in the Those Were The Days) and Michelle Jansen on vocals, with Brian Fraser on drums, Jenny Wilkins on bass guitar, Tory du Plessis on keyboards, Josh Thatcher on guitar, with Colin Mairs (saxophone) and Gavin Knox-Grant (trumpet) back to complete the cast on brass.

The ten-piece cast will give renditions of golden hits that include Good Vibrations, Under the Boardwalk, Ain’t No Sunshine, Conga, Soak Up The Sun, Walking On Sunshine and Summer of 69.

Celebrate the silly season in inimitable surf city style from October 3 to January 7, 2007. Tickets R100 (Buy One Get One Free on Tuesday nights and Sunday matinees, including Christmas Eve). There will be a bumper New Year’s Eve show on December 31 but there will be no shows on December 25 and January 1.
