SINATRA, DAVIS & MARTIN (article first published : 2006-09-2)

The new Dockyard Supper Theatre on Musgrave kicks off with a return to the age of swing. Before rock Ďn roll burst onto the scene in the mid 1950ís, an evening out was an elegant affair.

From the 1930ís right through to the 1960ís, revellers could jive and dance to an oily voiced crooner or silk stocking-ed songstress backed by a big band.

Once Elvis Presley, The Beatles and pop music in general took over in the 50ís and 60ís, lounge singers like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett and the like continued to exist, but mainly to a more sophisticated, slightly older audience.

In the 60ís with the growth of Las Vegas, performers like Sinatra, Davis & Martin (commonly known as The Rat Pack) dominated the showbiz scene in Las Vegas, New York and Miami. The scene was Bri-Nylon, Crimplene, Houndstooth suits, Bob Hope hats, and Lincoln Continentals, Pontiac Parisennes and Chevy Biscaynes were the automobiles to drive. They came in garish Tu-tone colours and sported white sidewall tyres.

The Sinatra, Davis & Martin show will feature a 13-piece big band, three singers including that old ĎLounge Lizardí himself, Stuart Mey, crooning a number or two.

No opening date has as yet been set. For more info phone 076 197 5301.
