NEW DOCKYARD (article first published : 2006-09-2)

The Dockyard Supper Theatre is set to open this month in its new premises at Musgrave Centre in the space formerly occupied by Legends restaurant. The organisation also intends to expand its activities.

“Our operation will extend beyond the production of shows,” says Dockyard owner and director Stuart Mey. “The new Dockyard Theatre will offer clients the same high quality shows, but will also trade as an a la carte restaurant during the day and on evenings when the shows are not staged. It is my intention to run a sophisticated late night restaurant for all night ‘razzerlers’. How many times have you come out of a movie or a show, looked for somewhere to eat or just hang out for a drink, and everything is closed?”

The new Dockyard will be decorated to represent an industrial ‘ship-yard’ feel in hues of blues, charcoal and grey. A mezzanine floor will offer patrons a choice of an elevated view or ground floor seating. The theatre will boast a main stage for normal productions and shows as well as a smaller stage in the bar area.

“My intention is that musicians, people who want to audition and smaller informal mini shows can take place on this small stage,” says Stuart. “It will be fully equipped with a small yet respectable sound system, piano/keyboard, drum kit, bass guitar, guitar and microphones. I get many a request from would-be performers to audition for my shows. As I am always on the look out for young and new talent, I feel that this method of auditioning would put a performer at ease rather than have to strut his stuff in an empty auditorium with me looking on like Simon Cowell.”

Early birds will be able to enjoy a Dockyard breakfast from as early as 06h00 and an Omelette Bar will also be introduced.

Dockyard on Musgrave opens shortly with a tribute show titled Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr. & Dean Martin featuring a 13-piece big band. Contact Dockyard on the temporary number 076 197 5301.
