TOM JONES & JOHNNY MATHIS (article first published : 2006-08-1)

Gino Veronie and Kobus van Niekerk supported by Colin Penn and his Pennants will present Tom Jones and Johnny Mathis when Colin Penn “transports” the music of these super stars to the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo.

You name them…..he’s done them! Colin Penn is well-known for his tribute shows featuring the music associated with legends such as Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Cliff Richard, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Liberace, Satchmo and Ella, to name but a few.

“I stick to this era because the songs are really great and everyone knows them,” says Colin Penn about his latest show. “Just look at the songs… Delilah, It’s Not Unusual, Just Help Yourself, Green Green Grass Of Home, Lonely is a Man Without Love, That’s what Friends are for, Misty, A Certain Smile, If, Over the Rainbow, More, Cheek to Cheek and many more. How can you go wrong? Two hours of pleasurable nostalgia!”

As usual Colin Penn and his Pennants wisecrack their way through the show whilst providing professional backing to talented Gino Veronie and “new kid on the block” Kobus van Niekerk.

“The fact that Tom Jones and Johnny Mathis are still performing live after 40 years in show business indicates their enormous popularity throughout the world,” says Colin. “This is a meeting of the ‘hot’ rock and roll numbers that had us combing our ducktails and looking for our stiff petticoats and the soft ballads that had us fighting for the back seat of the Studebaker!”

Tom Jones and Johnny Mathis has performances on August 4 and 5 at 20h00 with a further show on August 6 at 18h30. The venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic dinner.

Tickets R60. Take along food picnic baskets and braais will be available. There is limited secure parking and booking is essential. A cash bar is available (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises). Rhumbelow Theatre is situated in Cunningham Avenue off Bartle Road.
