JUKE BOX HERO (article first published : 2006-07-17)

Opening at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway on July 18, Juke Box Hero features no less than 50 number one hits from the last six decades of popular music. This time, itís a compilation show with a difference as the audience chooses songs and the cast perform requests live on stage.

A host will lead individuals in the audience who will appear live on the big screen to make their dedication. Juke Box Hero is one big party and starts in the 50s, moving through the decades, to the 21st century where patrons will encounter modern-day hit surprises.

As the audience counts down the hits, the temperature rises. Featuring everything from the 50s where artists like Elvis, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison reigned supreme to the fabulous 60s when British bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones ruled the world. The 70s provide material from Elton John, The Bee Gees and ABBA, while the 80s offer super groups like Queen and U2. In the 90s, Celine Dion and Oasis took to the air waves and modern material encompasses the music of James Blunt and Christine Aguilera. However, in the end, the audience dictates the final song list!

This hit machine is no ordinary juke box as it comes alive with real musicians to perform smash hits that will never fade away. This is the perfect show for a society that expects interactive technology and instant gratification.

Juke Box Hero runs from July 18 to August 27. Tickets R100 (Buy One Get One Free on Tuesday nights and Sunday matinees). Bookings and enquiries on 031 566 3045, e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatre.co.za or visit www.barnayrdtheatre.co.za
