BLACK MAMBA (article first published : 2006-07-7)

KZN audiences will get two chances to see Black Mamba - the new two-hander sketch-based comedy satire by hardworking and talented Durban actors/writers Ben Voss and John van de Ruit. The production will be performed at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest from July 11 until 30 and again at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival from September 15 to 17.

Black Mamba premiered at last year's National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July and was, according to Computicket, officially the fastest selling show on the fringe! It is currently playing there again this year. The second show of the Mamba series (after the phenomenally successful Green Mamba) returns to KwaZulu-Natal after its Eastern Cape season. It stars Ben Voss and John van de Ruit and is written by John, Ben and Greig Coetzee. Direction is by Murray McGibbon who directed Ben and John in Frank&Stein at Kwasuka Theatre last year.

This time Ben and John have sharpened their pencils to make Black Mamba more of a biting satire than their previous productions. Whereas Green Mamba was delicious sketch-based comedy, Black Mamba

Highlights of Black Mamba include a twelve minute illustrated History of South Africa which spans 600 years of conquering and re-conquering; a brilliant quiz show called The Missing Link; and a savage Grilling of the Minister of Health.

The show runs from July 11 to 30 at the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 19h00 (meal) for 20h30 (show), and Sunday lunchtime specials at 12h30 (lunch) for 14h00 (show), Tickets R165 (R140 Tuesday evenings and Sunday lunch) include the meal and show. Booking on 031 765 4197 and at Computicket.
