GREASE (article first published : 2006-06-17)

Grease fever has gripped the country as The Barnyard Theatre Productions brings audiences a brand-new rendition of the world-acclaimed rock ‘n roll musical.

Who would have thought that after a shaky beginning in an experimental theatre in Chicago in February 1971 that Grease would become one of the world’s best loved musicals?

“Grease is the ultimate celebration of youth and nostalgia,” explains director Ian von Memerty. “The music is all feel-good, hand-clapping, toe-tapping music that stays in your head, and that everybody loves. It’s about that fantastic time in everyone’s life when you are on the cusp of being a teenager and an adult. That time when our hormones are howling, but we are still relatively naïve and inexperienced, no matter how much we pretend otherwise.

Grease is filled with characters that we can identify with and has an energy, innocence and charm that offers completely captivating and truly escapist entertainment!”

Ian von Memerty goes on to state that after audition for over two months around South African he is very excited about the cast that has been assembled. Steve Peralta and Shannyn Fourie feature as Danny and Sandy, supported by Lee Rath, Carly Graeme, Tessa Denton, Rozanne McKenzie, James MacEwan, Steven Hicks and Pierre Van Heerden. Also appearing is Durban singer Jeanette Summerton.

Well-known Durban artist Andrew Verster has designed the costumes with Denis Hutchinson on lights, Stan Knight on set and Harold van Buuren on choreography.

Grease runs at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway in association with East Coast Radio until July 16. Tickets are now sold out and, although the run cannot be extended, extra shows are being staged on weekends within the run. For bookings and enquiries regarding these extra shows, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 566 3045 or e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatre.co.za for more information.
