CONCERTO FOR 2 (article first published : 2000-06-29)

For the first time since their marriage, singer Melanie Roberts and pianist Philipp Maier will work together in a show titled Concerto for 2.

This is a performance team with considerable resources. Philipp has appeared in Mercury Rising and Durban Pops as well as the KZNPO Millennium Concert and Friends of Music recitals. Melanie has been part of the Durban cabaret scene for many years and has been seen in shows such as Unforgettable and Too Darn Hot. She recently performed in Showgirls at the Royal’s Backstage.

With Melanie’s international cabaret experience and Philipp’s classical repertoire, it is not surprising that the show promises more than 10 different musical styles. Expect to see anything from Billy Idol to Tchaikovsky, Gershwin to George Benson, Symphonic Rock to Techno Rave or from Jerry Lee Lewis to Olympic Anthems. Included for good measure are numbers from Huey Lewis, Elton John, Richard Marx and John Mills.

Originally conceived by Gary Mackenzie of the Geejays, Concerto for 2 is devised and directed by Duncan Royce with lighting design by Michael Broderick. All tracks, arrangements , compositions and original material are by Philipp Maier. Some of the songs in the show include White Wedding, Winter Games, Root Beer Rag, Music was my first Love, On Broadway, Do you believe in Love, Tonight, Great Balls of Fire, All right Now and Send in the Clowns.

Concerto for 2 runs at the Langoustine Theatre By The Sea from July 4 to 29. Book early! The show cannot be extended beyond July 29. Phone (031) 563-7324 or book at Computicket.
