VAGABOND (article first published : 2000-06-12)

Dubbed “South Africa's little sparrow” for her remarkable interpretations of Edith Piaf's songs, much-loved and highly popular chanteuse Danièle Pascal visits Durban for a short season with her new production Vagabond. The show will play the Langoustine Theatre by the Sea from June 14 for nine performances only.

Danièle's highly skilled musical techniques and her unbridled on-stage passion have commanded the respect of audiences for many years. She has notched up an impressive record of cabaret shows as well as interpretations of and tributes to the music of Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Marian Faithfull and, more recently, Edith Piaf. The latter show was premiered at the Karoo festival in 1998 where it played to standing ovations and sold out houses. Her latest contribution, Vagabond, honours "wild women we all love" - the vagabonds. The songs in the show explore the themes of love, faith, loss and the dance of life - with a sense of joyousness and melancholy that is intensely personal.

Danièle will be accompanied on piano by the multi-talented Stellenbosch honours music graduate Liza Joubert. The programme includes songs by Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Michel Legrand, Edith Piaf, Peggy Lee and Eartha Kitt and features numbers such as Illusions, La Valse des Lilas, Autumn Leaves, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Padam Padam, J'attendrai and Here's to Life.

Tickets at R100 include a three-course meal. Tickets R69 on Tuesdays (Ladies’ Night) include a two-course meal (you can bring your guys along too!). Book through the Langoustine on (031) 563 7324 and ask for Lisa or via Computicket. Save half of your booking costs and book directly on the internet at http://www.computicket.com.
