KZNPO FOR OPEN AIR (article first published : 2001-05-17)

The KZN Philharmonic will perform a concert at the Open Air School Hall at 241 Frere Road in Glenwood tomorrow (May 18) at 19h00. The orchestra will perform a programme of light classical and popular music which will include the Light Cavalry Overture, Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Londonderry Air, March of the Toreadors from Bizet’s Carmen, Anderson’s Waltzing Cat and In the Mood by Handy (arr. by Holcombe). Other items include Sousa’s Stars and Stripes, New York, New York and the Radetsky March by Strauss.

Also performing will be the popular Open Air School Choir who will be “singing” (signing in deaf language while the audience hears the vocals) a traditional Zulu song, the humorous Umakoti-Ungowethu, World in Union and The Holy City.

The concert forms part of a series of celebrations commemorating the Open Air School’s 80th birthday this year. In February, the school opened its doors to pupils with physical disabilities. During the last 80 years, the school has continued to provide academic education and treatment in physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy as well as psychological guidance to thousands of young people

“As we look back over the 80 years of our history, we realise how much we have grown and how much we have to be thankful for,” said Mrs Felicity Hartley, principal of the school. “Having the KZNPO in our hall as part of our celebrations makes it very special and we hope that a great many people will be able to join us for the evening which promises to be most enjoyable.”

Tickets R25 at Computicket or from the school. Refreshments will be sold from 18h00 so audiences are invited to come early and enjoy snacks in the school gardens before the concert.
