CABARET ON THE COUCH (article first published : 2001-05-9)

Busy Durban singer, actress, teacher and artist Mari Visagie brings her delicious and innovative revue Cabaret on the Couch to the campus-based Square Space Theatre for a short season from May 7 to 17. (Review on Supper Theatre pages, possibly in Archives by now)

The production, which is co-written by Peter Collins and the show's director Eddie Magic, looks at the state of showbiz in this country. It is described as a bright, bouncy, off-the-wall show full of dramatic energy, wicked humour and outrageous costumes and wigs! Mari depicts Cabaret (in human form) who was at her peak of perfection during her Berlin heyday but is becoming a weary and aged specimen (walking with a zimmer frame!) in desperate need of a new injection of life.

Anecdotes are interspersed with a glorious mix of songs featuring everything from cabaret standards, carefully-chosen pantomime favourites, soulful ballads, familiar musical numbers, opera arias and some eclectic contemporary songs - from South Africa and abroad.

Featured in the musical mix are With One Look; Personality, Shirley Bassey's I Am What I Am; Madonna's You Must Love Me (from Evita); Making Whoopee; Sag Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind (from Threepenny Opera); Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, My Beautiful Life - the theme song from the film taken from Tales of Hoffman the Gondola Song and Supermarket Song.

Mari performs with Di Byrne (one time member of the now defunct Playhouse Dance Company). They are accompanied by Matthew Vlok on piano, as well as quality backing tracks.

Performances nightly (except Monday) at 19h00 with weekend matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 14h30. The proceeds from the Saturday matinee will go to the Feral Cat Rescue. There is a low-price preview on May 7 - when tickets are R15 at Computicket or the door.

The short season officially starts from May 8. Tickets R30 (R20 pensioners with ID). Block-booking discounts (10 or more). Booking is now open through Computicket nation-wide or for credit card bookings by calling 011-340-8000 or 083-915-8000.

There is also one performance at St Mary's School in Kloof on June 2. Tickets through the school. The production is also available for corporate bookings.
