THE LOSER EXTENDED (article first published : 2001-04-21)

Currently playing to full houses at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, Aaron McIlroy's highly popular musical comedy, The Loser (see review on Drama pages), currently playing to full houses at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre has been extended for a further five performances to May 5.

In his usual wacky style, McIlroy introduces a host of unusual and eccentric individuals. Placing the focus squarely on humour through characterisation, he takes the mickey out of motivational speaking from a number of different angles.

Directed by vita-award winning actress Sue Monteregge, The Loser is packed with high energy take-offs of songs featuring the music of Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Shel Silverstein, Tom Waits, Lou Vega and a range of Elvis tunes, all performed through different personae. The show features “Truscot Price”, world-renowned and unconventional motivational speaker currently appearing on East Coast Radio's Rush Hour Ride and whose magnetic appeal and overt positivism are contradicted by his offbeat leaps in logic and his unfortunate tragi-comic past.

The Loser provides light relief to the more serious side of motivational speaking and the effects it has had on the lives of various characters, interspersed with really good rock ‘n roll music.

Tickets R42,50 at Computicket or www.computicket.co.za Block bookings (20 and more) from Sharon on 083 292-5324.
