IT'S COOKING IN THE MELTING POT (article first published : 2001-04-20)

African music explodes onto the Playhouse Drama stage on April 26 and 27 when a four piece band led by director Susan Barry celebrates jazz and kwaito with the vocal talents of Xolisa Gqoli, Lihle Nene and Nina Mkhize. They will be accompanied by the hot street sounds of SHANA (Simply hot and Naturally African) and a troupe of dancers.

Inspiration for the show is drawn from Zulu, Pondo and Xhosa traditional music, and features African Jazz - including original compositions - and African songs sung to contemporary dance grooves interspersed with Kwaito style rap.

Xolisa Gqoli performed at the South African Womens’ Arts Festival 2000 at the Playhouse, and was chosen to represent South Africa with Lihle Nene at Norway’s biggest traditional music festival in 1998. She has performed extensively with Jiqa.

Lihle Nene has appeared with Busi Mhlongo, Ray Phiri, and Gito Baloi, among others. The energetic Nina Mkhize was a soloist in Joyous Celebration at the Playhouse and appeared with Lihle Nene and the Shuttle band in 1999, where they performed a cappella and backed Ray Phiri. In August Lihle and Nina Mkhize travel to America with other students from Technikon Natal, for a series of performances and workshops.

Singing in isiZulu, Xhosa, Sotho and English, SHANA members Demor Sikhosana, Mnqobi Mdabe and Nathi Maphumulo have dubbed their musical style Yisintu and offer a sound that is sophisticated and polished. SHANA was discovered by international star Busi Mhlongo, and is signed to UK record label MELT 2000.
