POWER RANGES (article first published : 2001-04-12)

The Pietermaritzburg-based Music Revival headed by Christopher Duigan will present a concert by the kerimov Trio in which the group ventures into the realm of “serious” music by tackling some challenging works for both performers and audiences.

The Piano Trio No 2 by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich is the main work in this programme. Banned by the Soviet authorities after its first performance in Moscow 1944 it is said to express much of the reality of life in Russia at that time. From the haunting and anxious opening, a fiendish dance of death and finally a defiant Jewish protest this work has become a favourite of audiences worldwide due to its powerful and direct impact.

Also on the programme is Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei based on a Jewish chant traditionally sung on the Day of Atonement, music for cello by German Romantic Robert Schumann and Brahms’s riveting Violin Scherzo. The performers are Elena Kerimova (violin), Boris Kerimov (cello) and Christopher Duigan (piano).

The concert lasts 70 mins and takes place at live@35 - 35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone in Pietermaritzburg on April 14 at 19h30. Tickets R40 include wine, coffee and biscuits.

Booking essential. Phone (033) 342-3051 or e-mail chris@musicrevival.co.za
