LYRIC - SONGWRITERS COMPETITION (article first published : 2001-04-5)

Lyric "the songwriters competition" is a new competition aimed at all singer/songwriters who perform either as soloists or duos. Lyric offers those who have a song in their heart and would like the opportunity of performing it live the chance to take centre stage and pour your heart and soul out in song, your song.

On Wednesdays singers and songwriters take centre stage at Bugsy’s Beat Bar in Randburg. No bands will be permitted to enter but members of bands may enter as individuals. Each artist will be required to perform three original songs.

A panel of judges will judge the songs and then the audience will also have the opportunity of voting for their favourite artist on the night. The audience vote is then added to the judge’s tally and two artists chosen to proceed through to the semi-finals. The top two artists each Wednesday go though to the monthly semi-final. Three first round heats are held, then a semi-final and the pattern repeated twice before the finals are held at the end of the three-month period.

Songs will be judged by the panel on their use of the elements of art such as: focal point, style, form, contrast, line, colour and their use of variety, curiosity and the way the song is planned and engineered.

Five artists per first round heats will be accepted on a first come first entered basis. Each artist pays a R25 entrance fee to cover admin costs. Participants also have to present copies of their lyrics for the judges. Each month a semi-final is held with six bands and two then proceed through to the finals where six soloists or duos will compete for a first prize of 10-hours studio time at Hedgehog Studios and a R1000 music merchandise voucher from Absolute Music.
