RICHARDíS DRUM HAPPY (article first published : 2001-03-21)

Richard Ellis has been presenting his regular Drum Circle at the BAT Centreís BAT Cafe every Tuesday from 19h30 to 21h30 for some time now. For a mere R10 entrance fee, enthusiasts can join the circle and get into the rhythm. Both experienced and inexperienced drummers are welcome.

City workers will be thrilled to learn that Richard Ellis has started a drum circle which will run from 13h00 to 14h00 every Friday also at the BAT Cafe. Tickets R10.

Now this percussionist extraordinaire is spreading his talents much wider with the introduction of two drum workshops Ė one for adults on Tuesday before the Drum Circle and the other for children (and parents!) on Saturday mornings.

The adults workshop takes place every Tuesday at 19h00 sharp and run for half an hour. The fee of R20 per session (R120 for six-week course) includes entrance to the Drum Circle at 19h30. This much-requested beginners' course covers an introduction to drums and drumming, drum etiquette, rudimentary drumming exercises and simple rhythmic patterns. Participants need to bring with them a notebook and pen or pencil.

Drum enthusiasts with families can all join in on Saturday mornings from 10h30 to 11h30 with Richard Ellisís new childrenís drum circle. The circle runs until December 15 and tickets are R10 (R7 children).

For information on the workshops or to book your spot, call Richard on (031) 332-2261 or 083 412-9746.

NB: Participants in the Drum Circle or workshops need to take their own drum/s or hire one for R10 from the BAT Centre's Field of Rhythm
