SPLASHY ROCK BANDS (article first published : 2001-03-21)

South Africa’s top rock band, Springbok Nude Girls has signed up to play at 12th annual >Splashy Fen Music Festival, which takes place from April 26 to 29 in Underberg in the southern Drakensberg.

Hailed as one of the country’s most wanted bands, the Nude Girls - Arno Carstens (lead vocals), Arno Blumer (bass guitar), Theo Crous (guitar/backing vocals), Francois Kruger (drums), Adriaan Brand (trumpet/synthesizer) - are constantly on the move. Besides the series of successful albums that are playlisted on the country’s top radio stations, the band has performed at all the major festivals in the country. They have played alongside the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Goo Goo Dolls, Fetish and The Cult as well as Yous N’Dour, Johnny Clegg and Hot House Flowers amongst others.

Their tours have taken them to England, Germany, Namibia and Belgium and they continue to do live gigs nationally. This multi-award-winning band won the SA Music Awards Rock Album of the Year in 2000 and have been nominated for Best Rock Album for 2001 for their recently released studio 15-track album, Relaxzor.

"This is the first time the band will be playing at Splashy, and we are thrilled to have them on board. They have been producing cutting edge rock sounds since 1994 and as Splashy audiences have been asking for them, we know their reception will be fantastic as one of our main acts at the festival." says Bart Fokkens, one of the organisers.

Another band signed up for this year is Saron Gas. Formed in May 1999, Saron Gas emerged onto the South African rock scene and rapidly established themselves as one of South Africa’s top emerging bands. Comprising talented musicians Shaun Welgemoed (vocals/lead guitar), David Cohoe (drums) and Dale Stewart (bass/backing vocals), Saron Gas name as influences bands such as Black Sabbath, The Deftones, Creed and Silverchair.

The vocals, written by Shaun Welgemoed, actively depict real life encounters, which further allows an audience to follow and relate to the band – a strong reason for their ever-growing South African fan base. The music is realistic, with great diversity per track – shaping the hard rock sound.

The band independently released their fist demo in late 1999, featuring the single 69 Tea. The track was greatly received by radio stations nationwide and climbed to number two on national charts. Saron Gas signed up to Musketeer records in September 2000 and worked with top South African producer Brian O’Shea to produce a top selling debut album release Fragile with features a re-recorded version of 69 Tea and a new second single Fine Again which has been well received by national radio reaching number 4 on the 5FM national chart.

Matthew van der Want, one of South Africa’s most respected musicians and songwriters is also signed up to play at the festival. His sharp lyrics, dark humour, and irony have always managed to cause a stir wherever he performs. A popular Splashy performer, van der Want plays acoustic guitar and performs music which is deeply personal and intense. He has recently released a second solo album Play My Way on his own record label.

Other news about Splashy is that East Coast Radio will be on board hosting a Juice it Up Night which will feature bands playing in the Marquee.
