SPLASHY MARQUEE (article first published : 2001-03-20)

South Africa’s longest running music festival Splashy Fen, now in its 12th year, takes place from April 26 to 29 in Underberg in the southern Drakensberg. Some exciting new additions and changes to the structure of the festival have been announced.

Formerly hosting rock bands in the evening, the Marquee stage will also feature daytime acts from 11h00 to 16h00 run by Syd Kitchen chairperson of Durban Roots Musicians Association. At time of going to print, bands signed up included Cape Town’s Bill Knight, Suzanne Joubert, Guy Collins, Splift (Matt Kroll's band), and Stark Raving Sane (didge and guitar). From Port Elizabeth come Natural Born Swingers and Strange Little Man.

KZN groups include Mim Erasmus, Ilan Lax, The Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, Savanah (Ian Henderson's group) and The Zulu Indigenous Music Ensemble (with Sazi Dhlamini). Also appearing will be Greg Georgiades, and Sharkbrother from Gauteng.

The evening acts in the Marquee, which will include the hottest, rock sounds in the country including Springbok Nude Girls, Perez, Wonderboom, Boo!, Butternut, Caffeine Substitute and Saron Gas amongst others. East Coast Radio will host their Juice it Up Night on Saturday night.

There are still special low-priced tickets at only R183 available for the rest of the month of March. In April the price is R208 and at the gate R220 per ticket.
