FRIENDS OF MUSIC (article first published : 2001-03-3)

Friends of Music will present two recitals this month at the SABC, Old Fort Road, at 19h45.

Aldo Lagrutta, The Paganini of the Guitar performs on March 6 at 19h45. For years, this classical guitarist has been enchanting audiences as a recitalist and solist in Europe, North, Central and South America, and Africa.

He began his career as a concert artist at the age of 15. His CD Latinando has won him the admiration of both listeners and critics alike. Aldo Lagrutta has made several appearances with radio and television in South America, Germany, Turkey and the United States. In addition, he has premiered important works such as Suite Homenaje a John Duarte by Antonia Lauro and Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra by Leopoldo Igarza, both of whom were his foremost teachers. Just three years after beginning his studies, he won top prizes at international competitions.

Aldo Lagrutta was the chairman for guitar at Morgan State University and after 15 years of intensive teaching at several conservatories and universities in North and South America, he now lives in Germany where he devotes himself to performing.

Aldo will perform Rossiniana by Mavro Giuliani, Lute Suite No 1 by Bach, Gran Yota Aragonesa by Tárreza; works by Agustin Barrios: Julia Florida, Vals Op 8 No 4, An alm for the love of God and Mäxixa as well as La Arrulladora and Tarantella by Castelnuovo Tedesco.

The Renaissance String Quartet, made up of Sergei Riabov, Ralica Milcheva Cherneva, Geza Kayser and Kristian Evgenieve Chernev will perform on March 13. Also appearing will be Diana Bares on clarinet and Christopher Duigan on piano. The programme includes works by Handel, Weber, Schumann and Tchaikovsky.
