CREATIVE MUSIC CLASSES (article first published : 2001-02-24)

Creative Music Classes for children between the ages of four and seven years begin again on March 1 at the University of Natal.

The focus is on fun, enjoyment and discovery. The children experiment with sounds and create, perform and conduct their own music. Formal notation is not taught but the children are encouraged to find their own ways of writing down the music they create.

These classes have been running for over 20 years. According to the programme’s initiator, Professor Betsy Oehrle, past students and parents have said that their initial experiences of music-making in these classes have provided positive stimulation for further study and musical interest.

The classes are held weekly on Wednesdays from 13h00 to 13h45 and on Thursdays from 13h00 to 13h45. Fee R320 per child or R580 for two children from the same family. More details from the UND Music Department on (031) 260-3353 or Tracy Robinson on 072 170-6845 or email: tlegs@yebo.co.za
