SMASH HIT FOR KWASUKA (article first published : 2001-02-18)

Kwasuka Theatre Company’s tribute to the singers and songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s, Those Were the Days, has already been extended to February 24. This reflects a success beyond the wildest dreams of the show’s creators who didn't expect it to attract such strong interest and audience response.

With this week closing to full houses and next week’s booking looking extremely good, it has been decided to put in an extra show. This will be a matinee on Saturday, February 24 at 14h00. Other performances next week are from Wednesday to Saturday at 20h00. (See review in Music)

Those Were the Days offers the most sophisticated lighting and sound yet seen at Kwasuka Theatre, thanks to generous sponsorship from Gearhouse Durban, Black Coffee Productions, Kingston Sound, Scotts Music Kloof, BA Sound & Electronics and Troubadour Productions.

Devised and directed by Patrick Collyer who also appears in the show, it offers an affectionate look-back at acoustic music and singers from the 60’s and 70’s. It features well-known SAfm broadcaster Monica Fairall who makes a welcome return to the folk music scene after an absence of about 30 years.

Also appearing are Fiona Tozer, William Wallace and David Atkinson who are well-known folk music favourites. Angela Dodds, probably better known to Durban audiences as an actress, has sung in shows such as Girls Talk and has worked at the Wild Coast Sun and on board the Royal Star cruise liner.

Those Were the Days offers selections from the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Cosby, Stills and Nash, Donovan, and Peter Paul and Mary. Tickets R25. Book at Computicket or phone (031) 309-2236.
