THOSE WERE THE DAYS? (article first published : 2001-01-21)

The Kwasuka Theatre Company will present an affectionate look-back at acoustic music and singers from the 60’s and 70’s with Those Were the Days, a production devised and directed by Patrick Collyer who appears with Monica Fairall, William Wallace, Angela Dodds, David Atkinson and Fiona Tozer. Well-known radio broadcaster Monica Fairall has been coaxed back onto the stage after an absence of 30 years.

“In this show, we hope to rekindle memories of songs not forgotten but seldom heard – songs from days gone by that are lodged deep in the recesses of memory banks. And, for those who do not remember the songs, we hope to kindle the same fondness and affections,” says Patrick Collyer.

“During the 60’s the world and music went through great changes. Those of us who lived through this time of increased social awareness and disenchantment with the Establishment wanted to ally ourselves to something bigger, something much larger and of greater significance that our single selves. We felt it important to let the world know where we stood and who we were and although most of us were not at the front lines of war or burning down the university's admin buildings, significant moments touched us in a group way.

“The sense of belonging was so important to the 60s folk that we wore our lifestyles as proudly as the slogan buttons and badges that we wore on our shirts. We thought peace and love were great ideas but we really liked the way we looked in flowing hippie caftans with daisies stuck in our long hair.”

Those Were the Days offers selections from the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Cosby, Stills and Nash, Donovan, and Peter Paul and Mary. The show runs at the Kwasuka Theatre from February 13 to 19. Tickets R30. Booking at Computicket or phone (031) 309-2236.
