KZNPO SUMMER SEASON (article first published : 2001-01-4)

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra's eight-concert World Symphony Series 2001 Summer Season runs from February 8 to March 29, with weekly Thursday evening concerts in the Durban City Hall at 19h30. The roster for this exciting season features a line-up of front-ranking artists from the international circuit as well as several of South Africa's finest musicians.

The season opens on February 8 with Verdi - A Man for All Seasons. This centennial tribute to the great Italian operatic composer Giuseppe Verdi will be given under the baton of Israeli conductor Omri Hadari. Guest artists in a programme of operatic highlights will include celebrated South African mezzo S'ibongile Khumalo, the noted young Russian soprano Larissa Tetuev and Cape Town based baritone Fikile Mvinjelwa as well as a massed choir comprising the Durban Serenade Choral Society, Imizwilili Adult Choir and East Coast Choristers.

Omri Hadari is back on the podium the following week for Magnificent Minors on February 15. Introducing the prize-winning Israeli pianist Aviram Reichart, this programme features Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor and Rachmaninov's Symphony No 3 in E minor. This concert is sponsored by the Aaron Beare Foundation.

Kaleidoscope on February 22 showcases the internationally renowned Russian violinist Boris Belkin in performances of Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Violins (with KZNPO's Associate Concert Master Sergey Riabov as the second violinist) and Brahms' Violin Concerto. David Tidboald conducts this programme which also features Mozart's Symphony No 39.

David Tidboald returns on March 1 for The Bold and the Beautiful. Spotlighting Russian keyboard virtuoso Dmitir Vorobiev in Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 3, this programme also includes Kabalevsky's Colas Breugnon Overture, Elgar's Introduction and Allegro and Janacek's Sinfonietta.

The London Chamber Players are the season's guest orchestra, appearing in Cornucopia on March 8. Works to be performed here include Bach's Concerto for Two Violins (soloists Fiona Simon and Josef Frohlich), Haydn's Symphony No 64 and Beethoven's Mass in C, with the KZN Chorale and the Durban Symphonic Choir. This concert is sponsored by Billiton SA.

The gifted young Netherlands based conductor Arjan Tien makes a welcome return to Durban for the final three concerts of this season. The first of these Nordic Horizons on March 15, comprises Sibelius' Valse Triste, Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor to be performed by Philipp Maier and the ever-popular Symphony No 2 by Sibelius. This concert is sponsored by the Rupert Music Foundation.

Slavic Gems on March 22 sees Arjan Tien back at the helm for a programme comprising Glinka's sparkling Russian and Ludmilla Overture, Dvorak's Cello Concerto with Mark Drobinsky as the soloist and Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony.

The season's closing concert The Grand Tradition has Arjan Tien on the podium for Mozart's Impresario Overture and Piano Concerto No 17 with the Melvyn Tan as soloist and the Symphony No 1 by Brahms. This concert is sponsored by The Royal Hotel.
