SPLASHY FEN (article first published : 2000-12-15)

Tickets for the Splashy Fen music festival which takes place in Underberg at the foothills of the Drakensberg from April 26 to 29 are now on sale at a huge discount. The move to open bookings early has been made to assist people to budget for the festival in advance and to offer the tickets as a possible festive season gift.

The ticket price is R150 from December through to February 2001. In March the price is R175, rising to R200 in April.

"With over 60 bands planned for the festival, it works out that Splashy-goers will be paying an average of R3 per band," said Splashy Fen farm owner and festival organiser Peter Ferraz. "On top of that we have some exciting changes on the cards and of course the special Splashy ambience will be stronger than ever. So you can say that the camping and the party come free...!"

Ensconced on the South African entertainment calendar as one of the premier music festivals, Splashy Fen also has become renowned for being the largest camping event in the country. The landscape virtually changes over night from grazing pastures with cows to a vibey array of people and brightly coloured tents set against an exquisite backdrop of the southern Drakensberg.

Inspired by the legendary Glastonbury Festival in England, Splashy's original focus was on folk music. Over the years, the focus moved to include more rock and world music and some international artists were included in the line-up. This year, the organisers have made a conscious decision to focus on South African bands, and aims to present "the best of South African music" which will include a selection of rock, world music and folk bands.
