PULSE OF AFRICA AT BAT (article first published : 2000-12-10)

A special fundraising performance of vibrant song and dance show, Pulse of Africa, is scheduled for the BAT Hall on December 15 at 19h00. It will be presented in association with the BAT Centre and will also feature the gospel group Sweet Humbled Voices

Celebrating the diverse cultures of South Africa, Pulse of Africa takes audiences on a colourful journey from traditional ethnic life to the Cape Coon Carnival, the mineworkers’ gumboot dance and township jive to a taste of India.

Devised, directed and choreographed by Brenda Peterson, Pulse of Africa stars Solly Junior, an original District Six and The Great Pretenders cast member, as well as an energetic group of 22 dancers and singers from communities throughout South Africa.

Pulse of Africa's aims and objectives include promoting South Africa as a tourist destination, as well as spreading the message of harmony and understanding between South Africa's different cultures. It also aims to create job opportunities for unemployed artists from all of South Africa's communities and to train, nurture and educate young talent.

Pulse of Africa has an impressive background from the days when they performed at the Shell Road to Fame and the Roodepoort International Eisteddfod in 1991. Recent engagements have included the Labour Forum, The Playhouse Omnibus, the XIII International AIDS Conference, Rothman's July Handicap, Vodacom Beach Challenge, Heritage Day celebrations, Imesa Awards and Sun City's Spring Festival.

Entrance R25pp donation at the door, subject to availability. Or phone Brenda Petersen on 083 344-5671
