GREYHOUND WORLD YOUTH CHOIR (article first published : 2000-12-2)

For the first time in its history, the World Youth Choir will visit South Africa. The Greyhound World Youth Choir will give one performance in KZN on their South African concert tour when they appear at the Drakensberg Boys' Choir School Auditorium on January 12 at 20h00.

Created in 1989, the World Youth Choir is a project of the International Federation for Choral Music and Jeunesses Musicales International. Every summer and winter, under the leadership of internationally renowned conductors, the choir rehearses and performs in different countries. In summer the choir meets in the city of Namur, Belgium, for rehearsals and concerts in the region. It then travels to another country for a series of concerts. The lucky country this summer is South Africa. The World Youth Choir, through its music, presents a message of international peace and brotherhood. In 1996 it was appointed Ambassador of Goodwill of UNESCO.

The tour, sponsored by Greyhound, will last from January 10 to 18. The choir consists of members from 16 different countries, including some from South Africa. The members have an average age of 22 and represent some of the best young singers the world has to offer.

The conductor of the choir is Steve Zegree, one of the top and most sought after choir leaders worldwide. His presence guarantees a choir singing experience second to none, especially for people with a taste for jazz sounds! Appearing with the choir as soloist will be Michelle Weir, well-known American singer and expert on vocal jazz.

The tour has been sponsored by Greyhound Coach Lines. The Greyhound SA tour also takes in Potchefstroom (January 11), Port Elizabeth (January 13) and Stellenbosch (January 16 and 17). Bookings through (036) 468-1017.
