CROSS-OVER ENCOUNTERS (article first published : 2000-11-29)

On December 2 at 19h00, the KZN Philharmonic will present the second of its Encounter Recitals this year. This will be given at the NSA Gallery at 166 Bulwer Road in Glenwood. The programme will feature chamber music with an African or Indian flavour and will involve an exciting mix of musicians in a significant musical fusion of cultures.

The first half of the programme will feature the KZNPO String Quartet, performing string quartets by two young South African composers Musa Nkuna and Bongani Ndodana who are currently working abroad. These will be followed by a performance of the concert suite version for string quartet of the famous ballet The Creation of the World by early 20th century French composer Darius Milhaud. Milhaud was the first Western composer to feature African rhythmic influences in his music and his Creation of the World pre-dates Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue by more than a year.

The second half of the programme will open with well-known Indian music specialist Patrick Ncgobo joined by tabla player Siva Nathan in improvisations on two Carnatic Indian ragas. The evening’s programme will then be concluded with all musicians joining forces to perform a new work by the KZNPO’s concert master, violinist Hristo Kardjiev. Entltled Meeting Place, this is based on a mix of Indian and Western music styles, including Bulgarian folk dances.

All are welcome. Don’t miss this fascinating musical event which promises to open new horizons for the performers themselves as well as their audience. Refreshments will be available. Tickets R25 each (R20 pensioners and R15 students and scholars). Book at Computicket.
