IZZY: ASCOLTA (article first published : 2000-11-15)

Beautiful Isobel Cooper, aka Izzy, has mastered the recorder, piano, clarinet and flute but it is as a singer that she shines brightest. Her vocal talent was spotted at the tender age of nine, earning her a place at a specialist arts educational school and eventually the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Her first album Libera Me, a mix of classical compositions and co-written original pieces, reached the number one spot in the UK classical charts within weeks of release and launched Izzy into the spotlight. It also won her a nomination in the classical category of the BRIT Awards. Impressive stuff for an artist who has just turned 25.

Her second album, Ascolta, released on the Virgin label, is a collection of classical and traditional songs set to storm the charts too. The album opens with an ethereal rendition of Donizetti’s tenor aria, Una furtiva lagrima, that is sure to tease the purists. Traditional songs My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose, Song of our Homeland and the delightful Lost Lady Found follow with Izzy’s silvery soprano effortlessly creating a soundscape of tranquillity and dreams. Delicate orchestral arrangements and vocal overlays compliment her voice as she takes you on a wistful journey that ends with a stirring version of Be Still My Soul.

Ascolta also features compositions by Bizet, Delibes and Monteverdi, arranged to appeal to listeners who are unfamiliar with classical music. In the same class as Enya and Sarah Brightman, Izzy Cooper may soon eclipse these “new age” divas. This is a young artist who stands at the verge of a promising career.

Bubble-bath music at its best – Clinton Marius
