FOILED (article first published : 2000-11-15)

Foiled is a new magazine/CD dedicated to the South African digital music underground available in South Africa for a R25, postal order or cheque (made out to Dror Eyal) sent to PO Box 882, Benoni, 1500.

Foiled was created “because you should be able to tell your isolationism from your electronica,” says its founder Dror Eyal. “The result is a sonic manifesto of sorts, a combination of eight tracks of bleeding edge electronica, breathey drones bludgeoned by vicious beats, reverberant drifts, deranged squeezebox sounds and hypnotic aural swirls, sometimes vaguely sketched, sometimes full blooded techno. The tracks cover genres ranging from Patient Zero's dark isolationism, through post-rock and Asqus' dum dum assault on techno.

Many of the tracks on the CD are also available as 16bit samples, for the aspiring remixer. The rest of the CD is taken up with a user’s guide to creating their own music.

“It features the kind of software that is used to fold, spindle and manipulate sound, applications that use arcane codex to turn sound into visuals, twist it on itself or just hammer it into a vaporous drone. Sequencers, trackers, links to sound resources on the web and samples,” explains Dror. “It also holds a complete back catalogue of the notorious Sheet Music Magazine, which until recently was the voicepiece of the scene.

The Foiled CD is accompanied by a booklet documenting music theory, explaining ideas like sound granulation, electronica's desire to “outreach the body” and exploring new thoughts in sound manipulation. The booklet also includes interviews and overviews of the South African luminaries of this borderground.
