ON HOW LIFE IS (article first published : 2000-11-13)

Big Concerts, in association with radio stations in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, is backing the forthcoming tour of vocalist extraordinaire Macy Gray whose double platinum debut album On How Life Is was successfully received. The artist has been described as “the hottest breakthrough act of 1999”.

In addition to her two Brit Awards, Macy Gray received two Grammy nominations and has been nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards and a Lady of Soul award. She has been compared to singers like Betty Davis, Nina Simone and Tina Turner but is master of her own personal style and writes her own lyrics which have been hailed as “relevant, inspirational and soul-enriching”. "My music is like back-in-the-day soul music. It's mixed with jazz, hip-hop, and a little rock,” says this highly versatile artist who refuses to pander to format, genre or market.

Macy's band comprises Dawn Beckman and Musiic Galloway on back up, DJ Kiilu (deejay), Dion Murdock on drums, Jeremy Ruzumna on keyboards, Dave Wilder on bass and Arik Marshall on guitar with Matt DeMerritt, Tracy Wannomae and Todd Simon on horns.

Presented by Big Concerts, Macy Gray performs in association with East Coast Radio on November 26 at Westridge Park Stadium in Durban. Other concerts take place at the MTN Sundome, Johannesburg (November 23) and at The BIG Arena (see story in Lifesmart), Canal Walk, Century City, Cape Town (November 28)

Ticket prices start at R110 (R115 Johannesburg). Booking exclusively at Ticketweb - www.ticketweb.co.za or phone 0861 400 500 or 082 232 7800
