SWIFTLOVE (article first published : 2000-11-10)

SwiftLove is a new band in Durban that plays a mixture of deep groove and soul like a new-millennium James Brown influenced by a mixture of African Jungle Funk with an element of Latino street music.

The group has an exciting new line-up, but is still fronted by the crooning Dax Martin, best remembered from the 90's band What She Said. The rhythm section is driven by strong, Holland-born Wim Eising and ex Dog Day Afternoon drummer Dave Baker and percussionist Mbongeni Gcwensa. The mood is provided by talented Etienne Moorcroft (ex Tin Jam) on trumpet with versatile Brendan Peacock on guitar. Jazz student Vuma Mkize, who also performs with the George Mari Quartet, blends jazz with electronic gospel funk on keyboards to marry the whole sound.

SwiftLove appears on November 15 at Rivets at the Durban Hilton International at 21h00. Entrance R15. More details from Martin Dax on (031) 208-0310.
