STEEL DRUM FESTIVAL 2000 (article first published : 2000-11-10)

The Sixth Annual Steel Drum Festival will be held on November 25 at the Durban Botanic Gardens. The festival will begin at 13h00 and is expected to finish at 18h00.

From 13h00 to 13h30, the general public will have the opportunity of learning a tune on the steel drums. All are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. The NEDCOR Community Centre Bands from Umlazi and Chesterville will perform from 13h45 to 15h00:

Special guests, the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform a selection of light classics from 15h15 to 16h00. This performance will give the children an opportunity to be exposed to a musical genre that they may otherwise have missed.

The inter-school steel drum competition starts at 16h15 and will feature over 2000 children and 60 different bands. The Steel Drum Festival is a fun event where all can participate. While providing an opportunity for the children involved to hear other bands play, it offers a highly entertaining day for the whole family. Food and drink will be on sale at the festival. Bring along picnic baskets and chairs and enjoy the relaxed surroundings and entertainment that the festival has to offer.

Tickets R10 (R5 for children) at the door.
