PETER FRANKL (article first published : 2000-11-6)

Friends of Music will host a recital by Hungarian born pianist Peter Frankl on November 14 at 19h45 at the SABC, Old Fort Road.

Peter Frankl has appeared on all five continents and has distinguished himself in the major musical centres throughout the world as an artist of keen insight and intense dedication. His career began in the late 1950s, when he won first prize in several international competitions (Paris, Munich, Rio de Janeiro) but the most important breakthroughs for him came with his London debut in 1962 and his New York debut wit the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell in1967. Since then he has been performing with the finest orchestras and conductors all over the world.

Peter Frankl has made over 20 appearances at London’s Promenade concerts and his varied interests have made him a popular performer at many international festivals. Among his numerous recordings are the complete works for piano by Schumann and Debussy, a solo Bartok and Chopin album, a Hungarian Anthology, Mozart concert with members of the English Chamber Orchestra, the complete four hand works by Mozart with Tamás Vásáry and Brahms, Schumann, Dvorak and Martinu quintets with the Lindsays.

In recognition of his artistic achievements, Peter Frankl was awarded the Order of Merit by the President or the Hungarian Republic. He is Visiting Professor of Piano at Yale University School of Music.

At the Friends of Music recital Peter Frankl will play works by Mozart, Janacek, Chopin and Liszt. Book at Computicket.
