BAT BAND BATTLE (article first published : 2000-10-24)

The finals of the Independent on Saturday BATtle of the Bands take place in the BAT Centre Hall on October 28. World Music finals start at 15h30 and finish at 19h00, to be followed by the Rock/Pop finals at 20h00

The four groups qualifying for the World Music finals are maskanda group Thusheleni Nabangqongqozi; the traditional Zulu act Amaqhikiza; gospel group Hybrid; and the winners of Heat Four, African Jazz Connection. These groups will compete for a five-track EP recording sponsored by M1 Production Studios and a R2,500 equipment voucher sponsored by Roland.

Competing in the Rock/Pop category will be Christian Punk Rock group Balaam's Donkey; metal group Karnage; funk rockers Quzo; and soul groove machine Swiftlove who won Heat Four. These groups will compete for a quality five-track EP recording partly sponsored by Sonic Studios as well as a R2,500 equipment voucher sponsored by Roland.

Also up for grabs is a Fender Squire Stratocaster guitar for the most promising lead guitarist and a Fender Squire Precission Bass Special Stratocaster for the most promising bass guitarist. Also open to all eight groups competing is a slot on Splashy Fen 2001 Music Festival.

Audiences are urged to attend the finals as it is hoped that there will be sufficient cash left from door takings to award cash prizes to the finalists that do not win an EP recording. The BATtle of the Bandís success is directly due to the help of Independent on Saturday, Gearhouse Durban and Paul Bothner Music.

Tickets at the door: R20 single feature, R30 double feature. More details from Neil Comfort of Bandwagon Afrika on (031) 702-1188 or e-mail bandwagon@artslink.co.za
