KZN TALENT SHINES (article first published : 2000-10-21)

Forming part of the KZN Philharmonic’s World Symphony Series 2000, the National Youth Concerto Festival conducted by David Tidboald was held on October 19. The audience responded with pride to the extraordinary talents of three of the young performers who either live in Durban or have KZN links.

Shraddha Haribhai (15), a pupil at Crawford College in Durban who charmed one and all with her wide smile, performed the second and third movements of Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D Major.

Soprano Joyce Moholoagae, is a BMus student at the University of Natal Durban and currently a pupil of Colleen Philp. She gave a powerful rendering of My Man’s Gone Now from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess:

Currently in his final year of a BMus degree at Cape Town University, Pietermaritzburg-born Marc Uys began studying with KZNPO violinist Isaac Melamed in 1986. He performed Chausson’s Poème with surety and control.

The rest of the performers were just as impressive. They included soprano Erica Eloff who sang Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate and cellist Stefan Grové who performed the second and third movement of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto. Ilse Minnie proved that the marimba is a viable orchestral instrument with her fine rendering of Ney Rosouro’s Concerto for Marimba: Lament & Farewell. Pianist Philip Avierinos handled with aplomb the first movement of Khachaturian’s difficult Piano Concerto.

Watch for William Charlton-Perkins’s review early next week on these pages.
