KZNPO CONCERT SERIES (article first published : 2000-10-9)

Dramatic discounts for subscribers and a bumper line-up of music and musicians with strong appeal for a wide range of concert-goers are offered to music lovers to support the KZN Philharmonic's 10-concert Spring Season which runs every Thursday at 19h30 in the Durban City Hall until November 23.

The season’s guest roster showcases a spread of star names from abroad, along with the best of South African artists. The line-up includes the German maestro Wolfram Christ; Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko; American maestro, Lesley B Dunner and SA-based conductors David Tidboald and Naum Rousine.

Soloists include the renowned Hungarian pianist Peter Frankl, France’s acclaimed Ludwig Quartet, fiery Russian pianists Alexander Izbitser and Dror Biran, as well as Durban’s own gifted keyboard star Lara Jones and leading South African soprano Linda Bukhosini, among others.

The season’s repertoire has been deliberately geared to introduce the great aural spectacle of the world’s concert classics for a wide new audience to share. These will include works such as Beethoven’s mighty Emperor Concerto, Orff’s supercharged choral showpiece Carmina Burana, Richard Strauss’s gigantic Alpine Symphony and masterworks by Bach, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Scriabin, Mussorgsky, Martinu and others.

The safety of concert-goers has been addressed by the close presence of the security company City Eyes who will be posted across the entire block surrounding the City Hall.
