FIELD BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS (article first published : 2000-09-19)

Last year, the PG Bison Buccaneers field band featuring young performers from Umlazi and Chesterville became the Field Band Foundationís national champions. Accompanied by the field bandís KZN regional director Bryan Clarke, they head for Johannesburg this weekend to defend their title in this yearís national championship. This will be held on Saturday (September 23) at Helpmekaar High School (corner of Empire and Melle Roads) from 11h00 to 14h00.

The championship is the culmination of the year's activities for all the bands and the competition is very tight. Renowned trumpet player Johnny Mekoa and Mark Hawkins, director of Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company will be among the judges as will artSMart editor Caroline Smart. Honoured guest will be a judge from the International Drum Corps (DCI) who will conduct workshops with the teachers of the Foundation while in South Africa.

Giving the PG Bison Buccaneers a run for their money will be the Penny Players from Cloetesville near Stellenbosch, The Shatterprufe Northern Eagles from Port Elizabeth, the PFG Londulusha Field Band from KwaThema and the PG Glass Rea Agana Field Band from Dobsonville.

The Foundation does grassroots arts development daily with 2400 underprivileged children from 145 schools in 31 townships countrywide.

Entrance to the championships is free. More details from Retha Cilliers on 083 775-4346 or e-mail: rethacil@iafrica.com
