TWO PIANO RECITAL (article first published : 2000-09-4)

Internationally recognised composer Kevin Volans returned to his former home town of Durban recently courtesy of the British Council to take part in the Jomba! Contemporary Dance Experience held at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

Kevin Volans will give a recital of works for two pianos together with acclaimed pianist Jill Richards presented by the Oude Meester Foundation for the Performing Arts at the University of Natal Durban’s Howard College theatre tomorrow (September 5 at 19h30). Volans is no stranger to the university campus as he taught composition in the School of Music from 1982 to 1984.

The programme will include Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro and La Valse, Debussy’s En Blanc et Noir, Lutoslawski’s Paganini Variations and the South African premier of Volans’s own Cicada. Recently released on CD, Cicada has been hailed as one of Volans’s “finest and most extravagantly beautiful works”.

Pietermaritzburg-born Volans is probably best known for characteristic style of shifting textures and dynamic rhythmic complexity, reminiscent of the polyrhythms of traditional African music. Hundreds of concerts and broadcasts of his work have been given worldwide and 14 compact disc have featured his compositions. He has collaborated with several choreographers and some 20 dance companies all over the world have used his music.

South African pianist Jill Richards has performed widely as a chamber musician and soloist with a special interest in South African music. She has given concerts all over the world and has released two CD’s of South African piano music and has had numerous works dedicated to her by local composers.

Tickets R20 (R10 students) available at the door. Enquiries on (031) 260-3353.
