THOUSAND VOICES (article first published : 2000-09-4)

As part of Heritage Day celebrations, Opera Africa in association with the Playhouse Company will present a programme of opera choruses on September 23.

“We promise you a night that you will never forget; a night of a thousand voices singing familiar excerpts from best-loved operas,” explains Opera Africa’s director Sandra de Viliers who promises a spectacular and visual musical evening. “Opera Africa’s involvement in community choruses dates back to 1995. The results we achieved in our operas have made lasting impressions on audiences, music reviewers and the choral community throughout South Africa. As a further development the time has now arrived to intensify and expand our involvement to as many choirs as possible.”

What better way to combine efforts with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and 13 community choirs to celebrate operatic choruses by Verdi, Puccini and Mozart?

Convened by Petros Myeza and prepared by their conductors, the choirs will be under the musical direction of Hein de Villiers and conducted by Gerhard Geist. Themi Venturas will stage the production and Andrew Verster is the designer. A number of celebrities, politicians and well-known personalities will join the choruses and sing with them on September 23.

Opera Africa considers this concert an important contribution towards the nation-building programme of using music to build bridges between communities. As such, those wishing to attend are asked to make a donation of R60 or more pp towards the development of the participating choruses.

Should you wish to attend phone (031) 261-6708 or fax (031) 261-6938. Financial donations by cheque should be made out to Opera Africa (Pty) Ltd and sent to PO Box 30978, Mayville 4091. Tickets to be collected before concert date on September 23 from Jimmy at Ticketweb at the Playhouse.
