CHIARA BANCHINI FOR DURBAN (article first published : 2000-08-20)

Michel Schneuwly, principal trumpet with the KZN Philharmonic, founded the leading Baroque 2000 ensemble in Durban in 1998. Since that time, the group performs regularly in the St Thomas Church in Musgrave and has acquired a loyal following.

Michel recently secured funds from Pro Helvetia to bring an old friend of his to Durban to host a series of private lectures and master classes. Based in Geneva, Chiara Banchini is a leading artist in the field of Baroque music in Europe. Her Ensemble 415 was founded 20 years ago and is named after the pitch they tune at - old string instruments with catgut strings could not go up to 440. Ensemble 415 has become a reference name in the field of baroque music throughout Europe and they have performed in the most prestigious Festivals and with some of the biggest names in the field.

All advanced musicians wishing to work on technical, improvising, ornamenting and phrasing of the Italian repertoire are invited to join Chiara Banchini’s master classes either in the form of individual or private lectures or group workshops. These will take place in Durban from September 26 to October 1 and provide mainly “hands on” experience with authentic baroque bow and instrument.

Private lectures are R250/hour while two-hour group workshops (minimum of four and maximum of 10) will cost R100 pp. Those who simply wish to observe and listen at the workshops can do so at a rate of R50/hour and there will be special rates for students. Participants will receive free admission to Baroque 2000’s performance on October 1 at 11h00 in St Thomas’ Church with Chiara Banchini as soloist and concertmaster:

Bookings through Michel Schneuwly on tel/fax (031) 312-5539 or e-mail: sursouth@iafrica.com Write to Baroque 2000, 731 Currie Road, Morningside, Durban, 4001. The project is generously sponsored by Pro Helvetia.
