WILD OATS (article first published : 2000-08-6)

Wild Oats is a popular acoustic duo that plays 60ís and 70ís music. At present they are currently appearing at two venues: one in Bothaís Hill and the other in Umdloti.

Mozzy and Bernard are old buddies who got together to enjoy music a few years ago. Mozz plays acoustic guitar, composing his own songs and sings. Bernard, the harmoniser of the duo, shares lead vocals and also jazzes up their renditions of 60ís and 70ís material with soul sax and haunting flute accompaniments. Their repertoire is extensive, and includes old favourites like Hotel California and Gershwin's Summertime as well as numbers by the likes of Dylan, CCR, Donovan, Simon and Garfunkel, Beatles and Mozzy himself as well as the great Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young partnerships.

Bernard Allan-Brown, originally from Bulawayo, taught himself to play sax and flute many years ago. In the early 70ís, he "retired" from humdrum ways of making a living and spent a year or so playing music professionally in Cape Town. Eventually, home and family called and his interests in music became purely amateur. Moving to Durban 20 years ago, he joined the Durban Men's and Durban Symphonic choirs and sang with them for several years, learning such diverse works as The Green Hills of Natal and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, one of his favourite classical works. With business pressures always at his shoulder, he prefers the more flexible routines of being the other half of Wild Oats.

Of Mauritian descent, Mozz de Fleuriot has lived in Durban for many years and is a guitarist of note. He has played in various bands, supported many well-known artists and composed several heart-rending songs about his experiences with the lovely women in his life. Mozz's trade-marks are a well-recognised hat, long black hair and a ferocious black beard.

On Sundays from 12h00 to 16h00 Bernard and Mozz can be seen at The Pot & Kettle in Bothaís Hill which offers a Sunday lunch programme that is wholesome and fun for all the family. Breathtaking views over the Valley of 1000 Hills make this a perfect venue to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon in the company of Wild Oats, the chickens and the donkey! To book, phone Pot & Kettle on (031) 777-1312.

On Fridays, Wild Oats appear at the Tasca Bar in Umdloti from 19h00 to 22h00. Right on the beach (just north of the lifesaversí station), this venue offers superb sea views, a congenial atmosphere and fun Portuguese food. To book, phone Tasca Bar on (031) 568-1318.

Wild Oats are available to perform at private parties, corporate functions, weddings and other celebrations. For rates and availability call 082 456-5394.
