NEW CAPE TOWN ORCHESTRA (article first published : 2000-08-3)

After the demise of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, ArtsCape is to help facilitate the emergence of a new orchestra for Cape Town.

"We believe that a unique opportunity has presented itself for the establishment of an orchestra with a new vision which is more sustainable within the current realities", said Professor Brian Figaji, Chairperson of ArtsCape's Board of Directors. "We have taken cognizance of various proposals for a new orchestra and our position is that we would like to collaborate with all prospective donors in bringing about a new orchestra, but one which is based on core principles.

These principles are as follows: the programme, repertoire and artistic policy of the orchestra should serve the musical needs of all the people of the city of Cape Town and represent musical excellence. The composition of musicians and management should be as representative as possible of the South African population in terms of gender and race. A cadet and youth programme should be formed as an integral part of the orchestra to afford talented aspiring musicians the opportunity to participate in orchestral music and provide a vehicle for the training of young conductors.

The orchestra, which should be financially sustainable and have the first year of funding firmly committed before its launch, should provide services for opera and ballet at a nominal fee and participate in ArtsCape's education and development programme.
