KZNPO SPRING SEASON (article first published : 2000-07-30)

The KZN Philharmonic, now the only professional orchestra in South Africa, has announced the programme for its 10-concert Spring Season 2000 in the Durban City Hall every Thursday at 19h30 from September 21 to November 23. This features an exciting mix of music and musicians with strong appeal for a wide range of concert-goers of all ages.

The season opens with a programme entitled In the Woods on September 21 conducted by distinguished German conductor, Wolfram Christ, with France's renowned Ludwig Quartet as the soloists in the rarely-heard Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra by the great 20th century Czech composer, Bohuslav Martinu. Dvorak's tone poem The Wood Dove and his Symphony No 7 complete the programme.

The remainder of the season will feature guest conductors Stefanos Tsialis, Andrey Boreyko (Russia) and American maestro Leslie B Dunner as well as David Tidboald, the KZNPO's Conductor Laureate and Naum Rousine who is also a member of the orchestra.

Soloists include Bogdan Dragus and Elena Kerimova (Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins); Russian keyboard virtuoso Igor Tchetuev; New York-based pianist Alexander Izbitser; Russian cellist Borislav Strulev, and world-renowned Hungarian pianist Peter Frankl. Closer to home, there’s Durban-born pianist Lara Jones, soprano Linda Bukhosini and the KZNPO’s concert master violinist Hristo Kardjiev as well as soloists Andre Howard and Sanet Allen with the KZN Chorale and the Durban Symphonic Choir.

There will also be a performance by guest chamber orchestra Mitteldeutch Kammerphilharmonie Schönebeck and Tomorrow's Stars on October 19 is the title of this year's National Youth Concerto Festival.
