INGWEMABALA (article first published : 2000-07-22)

On August 11, the Umlazi band Ingwemabala (Cheetahs) will return to the BAT Centre to explore the maskanda soundscape.

Having performed together since 1983, this group has become an institution on the local maskanda scene. Phillip Nyuswa is the founder, lead guitarist, composer and choreographer of this band that has performed throughout Durban and KZN. They have performed extensively throughout the townships and appeared at the BAT Centre, in the Vuma Arts Centre at the Stable Theatre and the Wild Coast Sun. They have received numerous awards in local competitions and reached second place in the Ijuba Competition.

In addition to their simple love of maskanda sounds, the members of Ingwemabala are united by a desire to promote the well-being of their community using their music as a means to educate their audiences about disease and other challenges.

The performance will take place on August 11 at 21h00 in the BAT Café. Tickets 15.
