CADENZA EXTRA XTRAV (article first published : 2000-07-22)

How do you improve on a winning formula? Some people seem to manage. Devised and directed by Ian von Memerty, Rory Rootenberg’s Cadenza was a smash-hit and its follow up Cadenza Xtrav was an equal success. Now Rory is headed back to KZN and the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre with his latest, Cadenza Extra Xtrav which will run from August 1 to 12.

Rory Rootenberg has been described as the finest singing talent on the South African showbiz scene and the runaway success of the Cadenza concept bears testimony to this fact. It has toured extensively throughout South Africa and been met with much acclaim by audiences and critics alike. His first show rated a "10/10" rating in The Mercury when he performed in the Playhouse Cellar last year. His most recent triumph Cadenza Extra Xtrav combines highlights of both of the previous shows.

"During the past three years of Cadenza and Cadenza Xtrav so many people have requested their favourite moments from both shows that we decided to put the highlights of the two shows together to produce Cadenza Extra Xtrav," said Rory.

Cadenza - Chaos in the Classics introduced audiences to Rory's extraordinary vocal range – “a surreal soprano voice trapped in the beanstalk body of a booming bass-baritone”! Ian von Memerty has allowed the Rootenberg musical and comedy talent free rein. Rory performs anything from operatic arias to Afrikaans liedjies and Zulu ballads and has a fine accompanist in pianist Craig McLennan. Those who fell instantly in love with Rory’s miniature daschund Frieda-Jasmine when she made her stage début will be delighted to hear that she will join Rory once again, wearing three-strand Jenna Clifford collar (sorry, design necklace!) and that she is Y2K friendly!
