INDIBANO (article first published : 2000-07-8)

All artists appearing on The Sheer All-Stars “Indibano” – The Gathering are supreme musicians in their own right. Hence the title of this enjoyable CD of smooth jazz which is the brainchild of Sheer Sound MD Damon Forbes. The five members performing are Paul Hanmer (piano/keyboard), Sipho Gumede (electric bass), McCoy Mrubata (alto, tenor, soprano, flute) and Errol Dyers (guitar) and Frank Paco (drums).

Of the five, Sipho Gumede is no stranger to KZN audiences as he was born in Cato Manor and was playing pennywhistles and home-made guitars at an early age. He toured with Gibson Kente for a time then teamed up with the short-lived Roots group before forming Spirits Rejoice with Bheki Mseleku, an innovative and creative jazz fusion band. With Khaya Mhlangu in 1982, he formed the highly popular Sakhile which explored fusion coupled with indigenous African sounds. He also toured the United States, Canada and the Bahamas with Harry Belafonte and Letta Mbuli.

All the arrangements of The Sheer All-Stars “Indibano” – The Gathering have been done by the five musicians and are testimony to their expertise, experience and professionalism. Overall, the sound is smooth and laid-back with the only number I wasn’t happy with being Katlehonger in which I found the constant driving rhythmic phrasing somewhat monotonous.

But the other numbers are highly enjoyable with good sax playing from McCoy Mrubata in Mabarane, >i>Sit Back and, particularly, Milagre. Paul Hanmer brought his keyboard talents to Langery and the gentle and charming Yasmin’s Cloud was my undeniable favourite.
