ROCKING GUITAR (article first published : 2000-06-29)

Opening on July 4 to run at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre is Themi Venturas’s high-energy new family stage musical The Guitar that Rocked the World - a “rockin' and rollin' celebration of the much-adored Fender Stratocaster guitar.

The Fender Strat (as it is fondly known) is all-American icon - like Harley Davidson, rock 'n roll and Disneyland. It has a long and illustrious list of players to its name, including the likes of Eric Clapton, Hank B Marvin, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly and Dire Straits's Mark Knopfler - all of whom have contributed to make it one of the greatest guitars ever.

Themi Venturas aims to capture a sense of the allure, influence and obsession of this magnificent musical icon by staging a major, large-scale production of a similar magnitude to Buddy Holly and Return of the Forbidden Planet with performers, a live band and a chorus of dancers and singers. He has written and directed the show with Barry Thompson as musical director and Peter Court as set designer and responsible for the musical staging. Leo Fender- the creator of the guitar - is being played by Frank Graham, with 16 year old guitar whizz Rowan Stuart playing the part of the young aspiring rock star.

The season is being produced in association with East Coast Radio. Tickets R49 (weekdays and Sundays) and R55 (Fridays and Saturdays). Block-booking, students and pensioner discounts available at the door Tuesday to Thursday subject to availability and on presentation of appropriate ID.

Book at the door or in advance through Computicket. Credit card bookings call (031) 304-2753 or save by booking directly on the internet at http://www.computicket.com. More details from Themi Venturas Productions on (031) 201 9242.
